Beyond The Gates

I just finished an incredible movie this morning called Beyond The Gates. A real must see! It's about the Rwandan genocide that took place in 1994 between the Hutu's and Tutsi tribes. There was a dialogue between Father Christopher, Catholic priest and Jim, young British school teacher that touched me and spoke volumes to my heart.

After watching a Tutsi mother and her newborn hacked to death by the machete of a Hutu militant, Jim, totally traumatized, asks the priest this question.

Jim: How much pain can a human being take? If you feel enough pain, does everything just shut down before you die?

FC: I don't know, Jim

Jim: 'Cause you'd think there'd be... you think there'd be something, something in the design you know? Some shut off valve if you feel enough pain.

FC: I hope so

Jim: Yeah, God knows. Maybe we should ask Him, if He's still around.

Later on, Father Christopher ends up staying at the school with all the Tutsi's who are seeking protection from the militants. Jim doesn't understand why.

FC: I have to stay!

Jim: Why are you doing this??

FC: You asked me, Jim, where is God in everything that is happening here and all this suffering? I know exactly where He is. He's right here with these people, suffering. His love is here, more intense and profound that I have ever felt.

Then you might like the classic book 'Mans Search For Meaning' which is about the Holocaust and the meaning of suffering.
