I love the South. I grew up here. So I'm more than qualified to write this post.
I guess it took me living on the West coast for a year to take notice of a few things. One thing, inparticular, that I've noticed since moving back to North Carolina is people's accents. Wow! They never fail to totally catch me off guard. More times than not, I end up thinking to myself, "now WHAT did he/she just say??" This has even been true with my own parents who are the walking epitomy of a southern accent :) I always joke with my dad to "speak English!"
As I sit here at Alice Jules, the local coffee shop in Monroe, I can't help but overhear two ladies having lunch. Or maybe it's just because they're talking so loud. I'm not really focusing on the quality, or lack thereof, of their conversation but more so their accents that I just can't believe. It's the loooong, draaaawn out pronunciation of their words that are causing me to clench my teeth. Or could it be the way one of them keeps talking about how darn poofy her hayer (hair) is? Hmmm.
I really do not have a problem with southern accents in and of themselves. I guess it's just the fact that I'm having such a hard time UNDERSTANDING what people are actually saying!
Oh well, I guess if I hang around long enough, I'll start speaking the language again. Or not.
